ABD Air Duct & Vent Cleaning provides a full range of chimney and fireplace services for Fairfax homeowners. You do not need to call multiple companies — we handle everything.
Chimney Cleaning & Creosote Removal
Our chimney sweep technicians use professional rotary brush systems and high-powered vacuums to clean your chimney from the firebox up through the flue to the chimney crown. We remove all levels of creosote — from the light, flaky Stage 1 deposits to the dense, hardened Stage 2 and Stage 3 buildup that requires special chemical treatment before brushing. We also clean the smoke shelf, damper, and firebox as part of every standard cleaning. When we are done, we do a visual inspection so you know exactly what condition your chimney is in.
Chimney Inspection (Level 1 & Level 2)
A chimney inspection is separate from a cleaning — it is a systematic check of the chimney’s structure, liner, and clearances to identify damage, deterioration, or hazardous conditions. We perform:
- Level 1 Inspection — a visual check of the accessible parts of the chimney, including the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and exterior. Recommended annually for chimneys in regular use with no recent changes.
- Level 2 Inspection — a more thorough assessment including the attic, crawl spaces, and areas around the chimney. Required when you are buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, or after a major weather event. Involves video camera inspection of the full flue.
After every inspection we walk you through our findings and explain, in plain language, what we found and what — if anything — needs to be addressed.
Chimney Cap Installation & Replacement
A chimney cap is the metal covering that sits on top of your chimney crown, over the flue opening. It keeps rain, snow, leaves, and animals out of the chimney. Without a cap, every rainstorm sends water down your flue, accelerating liner deterioration and moisture damage. If your chimney cap is missing, rusted, or damaged, we will replace it with a quality stainless steel or galvanized cap that fits your flue size correctly and lasts for years.
Chimney Crown Repair
The chimney crown is the concrete or mortar cap that covers the top of the brick structure, with an opening only for the flue. Cracks in the crown let water into the chimney stack, causing freeze-thaw damage that accelerates rapidly in our Northern Virginia winters. We repair cracked crowns with a professional crown coat sealant that bonds to existing concrete and creates a waterproof, flexible seal.
Chimney Liner Inspection & Repair
The liner is the interior surface of the flue — the part that actually contains combustion gases and directs them out of the home. Clay tile liners can crack from thermal shock or chimney fires; older metal liners can corrode. A damaged liner is dangerous because it allows heat, sparks, and carbon monoxide to escape into surrounding framing or living spaces. We inspect the liner as part of our Level 2 inspection and can advise on relining options if damage is found.
Animal Removal & Flue Blockage Clearing
Birds (especially chimney swifts), squirrels, raccoons, and bats frequently nest in uncapped chimneys. We carefully remove nesting material and debris and clear any blockages. After clearing, we install a cap or screen to prevent re-entry. Note: chimney swifts are a federally protected migratory bird — if active swifts are nesting, we will advise you on the legal timeline and install a cap immediately after they depart.
Gas Fireplace Cleaning & Inspection
Gas fireplaces do not produce creosote, but they still require annual maintenance. Dust, pet hair, and debris accumulate inside the firebox and on the burner components, reducing efficiency and in some cases creating odor. The vent system can also develop blockages from outdoor debris or bird activity at the termination cap. We clean the burner assembly, firebox, glass, and inspect the venting system for proper operation. If you notice your gas fireplace producing odors, not igniting cleanly, or the pilot going out frequently, schedule a gas fireplace cleaning and inspection.
